Our compassionate, experienced therapists are skilled at supporting adolescents and their families through challenging times.

At Slate, we have providers who specialize in providing developmentally-sensitive therapy for adolescents 13 years and older. We offer individual therapy for adolescents as well as family sessions involving their caregivers as appropriate. We have expertise working with adolescents struggling with, anxiety, depression, perfectionism, family stress, school adjustment, loss of loved ones, and difficult life transitions (e.g., family relocation, divorce).

Our therapists are trained to listen for the function of an adolescent’s behaviors and symptoms- not to simply label them as “good” or “bad.” We then apply this understanding to tailor our approach to each teen’s unique needs. We recognize that teens do not exist in a bubble, and we are skilled at considering how a teen’s context can perpetuate problems, and how even small adjustments to the context can help foster important changes and shifts in coping.

Process

Although the therapy process can vary, therapy is often most effective with some involvement from caregivers so the teen-caregiver relationship can be utilized as a source of support for teen clients. Typically, the first two intake sessions involve a combination of individual and combined meetings with a teen and a caregiver to discuss what has been going on and develop a plan for how therapy might be most helpful.

We are trained in child and adolescent development, and are mindful that with our older adolescent clients, trust and privacy can be very important within the therapy process; therefore, the role of caregivers in the treatment process varies case-by-case.

We recognize these are unprecedented times for our teens who are going through the typical struggles and transitions of adolescence as they also face the added stress of a pandemic. The pandemic disrupts many aspects of teens’ lives including school, sports, activities, and social connection. As a clinical team, we are here to support and guide teens who are struggling with feelings of social isolation, anxiety, depression, loss, and overwhelm that have become so common for young people coping with the uncertainty and stress during these times.
