Couples Therapy

Relationship stress can trickle into so many parts of our lives.

If partners are feeling disconnected from each other, wishing for more closeness or connection, or having the same conflicts over-and-over, couples therapy can remedy these painful problems. Couples therapy can break unhelpful patterns and enable partners to work together to create new ways of communicating and relating that enable both partners feel more heard, supported, and connected. Typically, couples therapy begins by facilitating partners in identifying the underlying patterns in their relationship that tend to contribute to emotional distance, distress, and/or conflict.

As partners gain a clearer understanding of the patterns that leave them feeling stuck, they will be guided in session to notice and change these patterns. This enables couples to begin practicing new patterns of communication outside of sessions as well. At Slate, we are committed to helping each couple recognize and utilize their strengths within their relationship to aid their change process.

Our overarching goal in our work with couples at Slate is to enhance each partner’s feelings of safety within their relationship, allow each partner to feel more understood, increase the couple’s feelings of closeness, and improve communication within their relationship. We have training in working with couples from diverse cultural backgrounds and identify as LGBTQ allies.
