Dr. Simone Schriger
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW
My approach to therapy is empirically driven, collaborative, and anti-oppressive, founded on pillars of empathy, authenticity, and warmth. When working with clients, I draw upon my specialized training in evidence-based therapies, tailoring these approaches to the unique goals of each person. I view therapy from an integrative and intersectional perspective, considering each client’s unique identity factors, sociocultural context, values, and lived experiences. I believe that each client is the expert in their own experience.
Within therapy, I aim to meet clients where they are, developing an understanding of their strengths, struggles, and goals. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and seek to develop trust with clients by creating an affirming and validating space that supports their healing. I strive to help clients deepen their understanding of themselves, build more self-compassion, strengthen their sense of connectedness (to themselves and others), and develop their sense of self-efficacy. I seek to work with clients not only to change their behaviors, but to better understand the function of these behaviors and find deeper healing.
I have experience in providing individual, couples, and group therapy to adults from diverse backgrounds. I have particular interest in working with individuals who have experienced trauma as well as those struggling with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. I also have experience providing individual therapy to adolescents; I greatly enjoy working with teens and collaborating with caregivers to best support their teen. I also find great meaning in working with individuals who are navigating identity-related concerns and life transitions (e.g., beginning college, work changes, relocation, divorce, retirement), as such transitions often create meaningful opportunities to address underlying (and often painful) emotions. Finally, I have a passion for working with couples, particularly those new to couples therapy, those with challenges in communication, and couples interested in proactively addressing relationship challenges before they feel they “need” therapy.
I completed my PhD at the University of Pennsylvania and my pre-doctoral internship at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. I also have a background in research and am passionate about improving access to evidence-based mental health interventions globally. My interest in mental health care is driven by social-justice-related goals, and I have a particular interest in working with individuals who hold marginalized and minoritized identities and who are part of communities that have historically lacked access to mental health services, including those who identify as LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC.
