KATE BUREK, LADC
Professional counseling intern
I believe that therapy begins with respect, compassion, and a safe, non-judgmental space. Reaching out for support is a meaningful step, and I’m honored to walk alongside people as they explore their strengths, challenges, and goals. My approach is grounded in the belief that when individuals are met with dignity, empathy, and encouragement, they’re better able to make valuable and lasting changes in their lives.
My counseling interests include the science of substance use and recovery, mindfulness, distress tolerance skills, the development of personal resilience, and anti-stigma and human rights advocacy. I often work with clients experiencing anxiety; depression; ADHD; and trauma symptoms as well as difficulty with stressors such as family relationships; work changes and retirement; and parents navigating their children leaving home. I have worked extensively with individuals identifying as women, both in individual and group settings, and have a special interest in women’s health, including supporting women through the emotional and physical transitions of perimenopause and menopause.
Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. I believe deeply in offering knowledge, flexibility, and choices to help each person discover the path that feels right for them. I draw from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and mindfulness-based practices. I’m especially passionate about helping clients nurture self-compassion and build a strong sense of self-worth.
As an alcohol and drug counselor I believe that substance use is often linked to efforts to manage stress, emotions, or painful experiences. I approach these challenges with curiosity, care, and a deep respect for the complexity of each individual’s story. My goal is to provide not only a warm and supportive environment, but also tools and insights that help people grow in understanding themselves and their mental health.
