Dr. Sarah Atkins

As a psychologist, my therapeutic approach is grounded in psychodynamic theory and incorporates aspects of family systems, developmental, emotion-focused, and cognitive behavioral theories.

I believe early in life people develop ways of coping and patterns of relating that may meet their needs then but may not serve them well in the present. Often, we are not fully aware of the impact of these patterns. It is my intention with each client to create a compassionate and safe space for you to explore and make meaning of how your patterns of thinking, ways of coping, and experiences in relationships may relate to your current struggles. Through the process of therapy, you can expect to expand your self-awareness, learn new ways to cope, and develop new, more adaptive ways, of relating with others. This process can help break the cycles you may feel “stuck in” and create new paths toward a healthier life.

From the first therapy session, I collaborate to explore patients’ concerns and develop a shared understanding of the changes they want to make in their lives. This shared understanding serves an essential role in how the therapy process unfolds. Throughout this process, I strive to help clients recognize and utilize their strengths as they take steps toward their goals.

I specialize in providing individual therapy to clients facing issues in their family of origin or other relationships; experiencing difficulty coping with life transitions (e.g., pregnancy, parenting, career, adoption, divorce); suffering from anxiety or depression; or recovering from trauma (e.g., childhood abuse or neglect, sexual assault). I also have specialized training in conducting couples therapy.

I have served in various roles as a psychologist in the mental health field including therapist, researcher, clinical supervisor, and university course instructor. I have also had the opportunity to work with diverse clients in a variety of settings. These experiences have fostered a deep respect and appreciation for helping facilitate the growth and change of others.
